WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 03: U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) questions former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein at hearing of the Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill on June 03, 2020 in Washington, DC. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) raised more than $3 million in the first three months of 2021. The freshman senator’s pull massively outweighs his colleagues’ of similar background, meaning the he likely benefitted from his loud, public objection to the 2020 presidential election results.
Hawley, a lawyer with degrees from Yale and Stanford, surprised many when he came out in support of Trump’s debunked voter fraud claims. Experts, however, point to Hawley’s constituents in Missouri, who overwhelmingly voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, and his presidential ambitions as a reason for his recent actions.
Hawley drew in more than 57,000 individual contributions since the beginning of 2021. Of that total, $600,000 came in the 20 days following the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
Hawley is not up for reelection until 2024, making his donation surge even more unlikely for the freshman senator. Senators like Marco Rubio (R-Florida) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), who are both up for reelection in 2022, have raised less than one-tenth Hawley’s 2021 contributions.
