Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts-D) called House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) a “liar and a traitor” on Sunday after audio of McCarthy supporting former President Donald Trump‘s resignation following the January 6 Capitol attack was released.
“This is outrageous,” Warren said during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union. “And that is really the illness that pervades the Republican leadership right now, that they say one thing to the American public and something else in private.”
“They understand that it is wrong what happened, an attempt to overthrow our government. And that the Republicans instead want to continue to try to figure out how to make 2020 election different instead of spending their energy on how it is that we go forward in order to build an economy, in order to make this country work better for the people who sent us to Washington. Shame on Kevin McCarthy,” the senator added.

McCarthy said that after speaking with Trump on Friday, there were no hard feelings between him and the ex-President and that he never asked or thought Trump should step down.
Warren wasn’t the only one who criticized the House minority leader. Colleagues from his own party, one being Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois), condemned McCarthy after the audio was released.
“Wow. McCarthy literally today said this was a lie and just a few hours later the tape with his voice from his mouth proves THAT was a lie. Incredible. @GOPLeader ought to be ashamed. Republicans, your leaders think you are dumb. Let’s be done with them,” Kinzinger (R-Illinois) wrote in a tweet.
