Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders spoke about the campaigns led by Vice President Kamala Harris (D) and President Joe Biden (D) during a recent interview.
While speaking to Politico‘s Ryan Lizza, Sanders described himself as an avid supporter of Biden and claimed that the Democratic party ditched him because he “has been the most progressive president of the United States since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.”
Sanders acknowledged that Biden performed poorly at the presidential debate but reiterated that he was a great president.
“Do I think Biden is a great campaigner? No, I don’t,” Sanders said. “But I think he’s an excellent president.”

Sanders also told Lizza that Biden is “fine” but he believes that Biden is “disappointed that he’s not going to be the candidate again.”
Notably, the groups that tend to support Sanders, including young people, minorities and progressive voters, were among some of the loudest voices calling for Biden to step aside and allow a new candidate to prevail.
When speaking about the Harris-Walz campaign, Sanders said he would work to elect Harris despite the fact that he believed Biden could win and serve another presidential term.
“I think she’s a very strong candidate,” he said. “We shouldn’t be overly confident, but I think she is generating a lot of energy among young people. I think many of them would have voted for Biden, but I think they are more energetic about her candidacy.”
Sanders also urged voters to support Harris during a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“We’re laying the groundwork for Kamala Harris to become our next president,” Sanders said at the convention. “Let me tell you why that it is so important. I want you all to remember where we were three and a half years ago.”
