Russian Casualties In Ukraine War Reach 80,000, Pentagon Says

In a new statement from the Pentagon, the agency said during a press conference that Russia has had suffered an estimated 80,000 causalities since the war in Ukraine began.

Colin Kahl, who is the Under Secretary of defense for policy in the Biden administration, told reporters, “The Russians are taking a tremendous number of casualties.”

Despite the continuing war and the murkiness of the specific details, the U.S. has gathered enough intelligence to estimate the Russian casualties, Kahl said. He specified that the large number accounted for both wounded and killed soldiers.

“There’s a lot of fog in war but I think it’s safe to suggest that the Russians have probably taken 70 or 80,000 casualties in the less than six months,” the under secretary stated. “Now, that is a combination of killed in action and wounded in action and that number might be a little lower, a little higher, but I think that’s kind of in the ballpark.”

Kahl remarked the casualties were “remarkable” and told reporters, “I think that gives the Ukrainians a significant advantage.”

Though morale is low for Russians, Ukrainian forces have taken heavy losses as well. As the Donbas region is being chipped away slowly, the Russians have captured around 20% of Ukraine.
