Donald Trump’s former attorney Rudy Giuliani reportedly advised campaign aides to “just say we won” on election night in November 2020.
According to a new book by Washington Post journalists Carol Leonnig and Phillip Rucker, Giuliani convened with Trump’s campaign manager Bill Stepien, chief of staff Mark Meadows and adviser Stephen Miller at the White House to discuss the vote counts.
Even though the results of the election remained widely unknown at the time of their meeting, Giuliani urged aides to lie and claim Trump’s victories:
“What’s happening in Michigan?” Giuliani asked.

Stepien, Meadows and Miller replied and stated that, because the votes were still being counted, it was too early to tell whether or not Trump would win the election.
“Just say we won,” Giuliani replied.
Stepien, Meadows and Miller advised Giuliani that making claims about Trump’s state (and nation-wide) victories without any evidence would be “both incoherent and irresponsible.”
Meadows allegedly told Giuliani: “We can’t.”
However, Trump took it upon himself to declare victory in the presidential race before vote counting had ended.
