RNC’s Chair Ronna McDaniel Says Committee Can’t Pay For Trump Legal Bills If He Announces 2024 Bid

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the committee can’t pay former President Donald Trump‘s legal bills if he announces he is running for president again in 2024.

“We cannot pay legal bills for any candidate that’s announced,” McDaniel told CNN’s State of The Union. “So these are bills that came from the Letitia James lawsuit that started while he was president. It was voted on by our executive committee for our former president, that this was a politically motivated investigation and that’s what it’s been.”

McDaniel made reference to a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General James, who accuses The Trump Organization of inflating assets to access better loan terms.

Recently, James scored a victory in this case when a judge ruled that Trump’s business should be overseen by an external monitor during trial.

The RNC also paid for the legal costs related to a lawsuit filed by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. investigating Trump’s real estate business.

McDaniel explained that any payment after Trump announces his new bid for the White House would favor one candidate.

“We cannot do in-kind contributions to any candidate,” she said. “Right now, he’s the former president who’s being attacked from every which way with lawsuits. And he’s certainly raised more into the RNC than we have spent on these bills.”

Trump is expected to announce that he’s running again after the midterm elections. Asked if she had any information about the former president’s plan, McDaniel dodged the question.

“I don’t even know what I’m doing for Thanksgiving right now, let alone thinking about 2024,” she said.
