Nazi sympathizers and white supremacists protested on Tuesday outside a Wadsworth, Ohio, drag queen story hour. Many right-wing protestors shouted “Seig heil” while carrying flags adorned with swastikas, leading to skirmishes where two protestors were arrested.

A clash between right-wing demonstrators and LGBT activists ended in two charges of misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Protestors reported a man pointing a gun at the crowd. Hate groups like The Proud Boys, Patriot Front and White Lives Matter declared their presence at the event.

The extremist presence underscores the violence that gay artists face and ongoing challenges to the LBTQ community.

Conservative politicians and media personalities have spread fear about LGBT “indoctrination” for years. The consistent leveraging against LGBT people has resulted in a spade of anti-drag and anti-trans bills supposedly aimed at ending “grooming.”

Fox hosts Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham railed against “indoctrinating schoolchildren” at several times on their respective shows.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) defended the use of the term “groomer” as a synonym for gay on Fox News, saying, “If you don’t want to be called a groomer, don’t try to sexualize six, seven-year-old children.”

The anti-LGBT rhetoric has fomented multiple acts of political violence, including a Colorado Springs shooting at a gay club that killed five patrons and injured 17 others.
