After President-elect Donald Trump chose Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his nomination for U.S. attorney general following former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal, Republican senators are expressing relief that they won’t have to vote on the controversial former congressman.
Bondi, a Trump ally, was one of his defense attorneys in his first impeachment trial before the U.S. Senate.
Bondi was Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019 and was the first woman elected to the position.
After numerous allegations of sexual misconduct, Gaetz withdrew from his nomination as U.S. Attorney General.

The investigation was dropped without charges, but the House Ethics Committee began investigating the allegations and was about to release its report when Gaetz resigned from Congress.
Trump has been accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women, and many of the picks for his administration have also been accused of various forms of misconduct, including Fox News host Pete Hegseth, former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr and tech mogul Elon Musk.
