Republicans Criticize Trump’s Claim That Constitution Should Be Thrown Out To Overturn 2020 Election

Top Republicans denounced former President Donald Trump‘s weekend claim that the Constitution should be disregarded in order to reinstate him as president.

“I don’t know why anybody would say something like that, certainly not an ex-president,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said. “I think that’s irresponsible.”

Others agreed, including the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota).

“I swear an oath to uphold the Constitution and it is a bedrock principle – it is the principle, the bedrock of our of our country,” Thune told reporters. “I couldn’t disagree more.”

Centrist Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who was one of the few Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment, condemned Trump on Twitter.

“Suggesting the termination of the Constitution is not only a betrayal of our Oath of Office, it’s an affront to our Republic,” she wrote.

On Saturday, Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the Constitution should be “terminated,” to overturn the 2020 election.

“Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” Trump wrote. “Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone False & Fraudulent Elections!”

His post was in response to Twitter CEO Elon Musk‘s revelation of the company’s “free speech suppression” in dealing with a 2020 New York Post‘s story about Hunter Biden.

Trump formally announced his candidacy last month for the White House in 2024.
