Madison Cawthorn won Mark Meadows’ seat in North Carolina at just 25 years old, becoming the first member of the House at the minimum age requirement since 1975.
Cawthorn, whose opponent for the district in the primary was backed by both Meadows and Trump, was confirmed the victor by the Associated Press. Cawthorn wrote “Cry more, lib” on Twitter in response.
Cawthorn was originally nominated by Meadows to the U.S. Naval Academy at the age of 18, but a car accident left him partially paralyzed and unable to attend.

Cawthorn has faced criticism throughout his campaign for both posts to his social media and his website that some deemed racist and supportive of white nationalism, but Cawthorn still won his district.
“I have condemned racism and identity politics throughout my campaign,” stated Cawthorn in response. The post attacked Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) for targeting “white males running for office.” Cawthorn claims he did not have knowledge of the post, and that someone on his team had posted it without asking him first.
