WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 09: U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), Vice Chairwoman of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol, delivers opening remarks during a hearing on the January 6th investigation on Capitol Hill on June 9, 2022 in Washington, DC. The bipartisan committee, which has been gathering evidence related to the January 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol for almost a year, will present its findings in a series of televised hearings. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) warned her fellow Republicans that they cannot stand on the side of former President Donald Trump and the Constitution in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Library on Wednesday night.
“At this moment, we are confronting a domestic threat that we have never faced before. And that is a former president who is attempting to unravel the foundations of our Constitutional Republic,” the GOP congresswoman and co-chair of the House select committee investigating last year’s January 6 Capitol attack said.
Cheney called out “Republican leaders and elected officials who have made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.”

Cheney has been one of the most outspoken Republican critics of Trump. She was one of the ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the events of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. She is also vice-chair and one of two Republicans to sit on the House select committee investigating the events of that day.
Cheney is embroiled in a contentious reelection bid and this fall will face off against Trump-endorsed attorney Harriet Hageman for Wyoming’s lone House seat.
“Maybe she didn’t learn the definition of irony at the Virginia high school she attended, but Liz Cheney is the last one who should be giving lectures about the future of the Republican Party when she is singlehandedly trying to burn it to the ground,” Hageman wrote in a statement condemning Cheney’s speech. “Cheney is using Wyoming’s only House seat to further her own personal war on President Trump while helping Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats achieve their own political goals at the same time. She’s doing more to help the future of the Democratic Party than anything else.”
