Rep. Jerry Nadler Defeats Fellow 30-Year Rep. Carolyn Maloney In Democratic Primary

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-New York) defeated Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-New York) in Tuesday night’s primary with 55.4% of the vote in comparison to Maloney’s 24.4%.

“Well, New York…we did it!” Nadler wrote on Twitter following his victory. “I’m so deeply grateful for your continued support and trust—I promise to keep on fighting for New Yorkers in Congress. Onwards!”

Both representatives have been members of Congress since the early 1990s and are known to vote similarly.

Nadler and Maloney are also two of the most powerful members of the House as the chair of the House Judiciary Committee and the chair of the House Oversight Committee, respectively. Nadler has represented the Upper West Side and Maloney has represented the Upper East Side for years, but their districts were combined in a redistricting effort over the summer.

Although Maloney raised the most money, Nadler gained the key endorsements of prominent New York Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“A big Democratic win in November will mean the difference between being able to move this country forward towards a more perfect union with equal liberty and justice for all – or watching it be sent on a forced march back to a darker time – where democracy itself is at stake and our rights are stripped away,” Maloney wrote on Twitter. “It’s been an honor, a joy and a privilege to work for you and with you. Thank you so much.”

Nadler will face off against uncontested Republican Michael Zumbluskas in November but is heavily favored in the strongly Democratic district.
