WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 05: U.S. Rep.-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) (L) talks to Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY) in the House Chamber during the third day of elections for Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 05, 2023 in Washington, DC. The House of Representatives is meeting to vote for the next Speaker after House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to earn more than 218 votes on several ballots; the first time in 100 years that the Speaker was not elected on the first ballot. Embattled New York Republican Rep. George Santos has filed paperwork to run for reelection in 2024. Santos, facing multiple investigations into lies he perpetuated on the campaign trail before his November 2022 win, filed a statement of candidacy to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Tuesday.
The paperwork leaves the door open for a possible reelection bid but does not necessitate a run by the much-maligned Republican. The filings come as multiple Republicans and Democrats have called for Santos’ resignation.
His statement of candidacy explicitly said the congressman didn’t expect to use his finances for a reelection bid. He faces questions after supporting his 2022 election with a windfall of $700,000 from an unknown donor after reporting a yearly salary of just $55,000 two years prior.
Santos’ filing came in the final hours a candidate can declare intent to seek reelection.

The filing also permits Santos to fundraise for campaign-related expenses. Other top Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have used fundraising dollars for legal costs from criminal allegations.
Santos, who lied extensively about his background while on the campaign trail, faces multiple criminal investigations and a House Ethics committee probe.
