Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) praised Capitol police officers on Tuesday during an emotional speech at the House select committee hearing on the Jan. 6 riot.

Kinzinger commended the officers for fighting off the pro-Trump mob that incited the Capitol insurrection on January 6. “You guys may feel, individually, a little broken,” he said. “But you guys won. You guys held. Democracies are not defined by our bad days. We’re defined by how we come back from bad days.”

Kinzinger then choked up, saying: “I never expected today to be quite as emotional for me as it has been.”

Kinzinger, who is currently serving on the committee investigating the insurrection, criticized fellow Republicans for downplaying the events of January 6. “We still don’t know exactly what happened. Why? Because many in my party have treated this as just another partisan fight,” he said. “It’s toxic and it’s a disservice to the officers and their families.”

Kinzinger was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump for inciting the insurrection.
