Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Virginia) declared her candidacy for Virginia governor.
In a campaign video called “What Matters Most,” she revealed that she will not run for reelection to the U.S. House next year.
Spanberger emphasized her ability to unite individuals during a critical moment when the country is facing significant challenges.
“Our country and our commonwealth are facing fundamental threats to our rights, our freedoms and to our democracy,” she said in her video statement.

She added that Republicans in Richmond are focused on banning abortion and books but are not helping people.
Spanberger has been a member of the House for three terms since her initial election in 2018 as the representative for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. She narrowly secured victory in all three races within a swing district.
Following her announcement, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report adjusted its prediction for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, changing it from “likely Democrat” to “leaning Democrat,” with a D+1 rating.
Spanberger made her announcement less than a week after Virginia Democrats achieved control over both the state’s legislative bodies. This dealt a significant blow to Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), who was hoping for a complete GOP takeover to support his conservative plans for the state.
