Record Lines At Food Banks As Coronavirus Economic Crisis Deepens

President Donald Trump signed the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) passed by Congress on March 27. The law grants millions to fund food banks to help people ride-out the coronavirus pandemic. But the scale of the aid might not be enough as jobless claims top 22 million this week. This week, photos emerged of record lines of cars as unemployed people tried to collect food boxes from food charities across the nation.

The Today Show interviewed one of the lead volunteers who had 1,200 cars lined up for supplies in San Diego. “When they see that box of food coming into the cars, some of them smile, and some of them cry,” he said. He estimates that his organization, Feeding San Diego, had fed well over 100,000 people last week alone.
