Pro-Choice Voters’ Response To ‘Roe V. Wade’ Potential Overturn Could Help California Democrats

California Democrats could use conversation over the possible overturn of Roe v. Wade in their favor.

Pundits say that a pro-choice stance could be the determining factor for voters in “bluish” states and districts, making them more unwilling to crossover or split their votes.

California has five battleground House districts. Out of those five, three are currently represented by GOP members and are seen as competitive.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is up for reelection this year, is already pushing the difference between the two parties. Just two days after the leaked Supreme Court opinion draft indicated the high court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Newsom released an ad saying “Reproductive freedom is under attack.”

He visited a Planned Parenthood facility in L.A. and addressed the crowd outside.

“Don’t think for a second this is where they stop,” Newsom said. “Pay attention, America. They’re coming after you next.”

Newsom wasn’t the only one to highlight the issue in campaign ads. Rep. Katie Porter (D-California) has also run ads critiquing the draft decision. The Supreme Court’s decision has long been expected since six of the justices were nominated by Republican presidents, while just three are left-leaning. Nothing is official, but a final decision is expected in late June.

A California poll also indicated that both independent and conservative voters in the state are against the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
