On Wednesday night, the RecallGavin2020 Committee announced their petition to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) had reached two million signatures, well past the threshold required to trigger a recall election.
Orrin Heatlie, chairman of the RecallGavin2020 committee, said in a statement soon after their announcement, “The People of California are speaking loud and clear. We have cleared another milestone. Politics as usual in California are over as we know it to be.”
California requires that a recall petition collect 1.5 million signatures before it triggers a statewide election. The group now says they have upwards of 2,060,000 signatures.

Next, the signatures will be verified by each of California’s counties to check for legitimacy. The RecallGavin 2020 Committee said in an earlier press release that they had already independently vetted more than 1.8 million of the signatures.
The RecallGavin 2020 committee was formed in response to Newsom’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. John Cox (R) who lost to Newsom in California’s 2018 gubernatorial election, said, “Gavin Newsom wasn’t getting it done prior to the pandemic, his response was an epic failure as schools and businesses remain closed longer than any other state, and now he hasn’t adjusted his vision for a California comeback.”
Newsom, unfazed, said in his State of the State speech Tuesday, “So to the California critics, who are promoting partisan power grabs and outdated prejudices and rejecting everything that makes California great, we say this: We will not be distracted from getting shots in arms and our economy booming again.”
Election officials have until April 29 to verify the petition’s signatures.
