Pelosi Considers Adding Another Anti-Trump Republican, Adam Kinzinger, To Jan. 6 Committee

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and House Democrats are considering asking Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) to join the select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack.

Kinzinger is a close ally of another committee member who Pelosi appointed: Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), a well-known critic of former President Donald Trump.

Kinzinger was also one of ten House Republicans that voted for impeaching Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

When asked about the appointment rumors, Cheney said that the decision is “up to the speaker.”

“That’ll be up to the speaker,” Cheney told ABC News. “I think that Adam would be an excellent addition to the committee … but it’s a select committee, and it’s up to the speaker to make that final decision on that.”

During her news conference on Thursday, Pelosi refused to confirm the specific details regarding the appointments but hinted that some Republicans would be joining the nonpartisan committee.

“It’s about seeking the truth, and that’s what we owe the American people.”

Meanwhile, House Freedom Caucus members are demanding Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) try and oust Pelosi from her position after she rejected Reps. Jim Banks (R-Indiana) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) from the select committee.

“We, the House Freedom Caucus, respectfully request that you pursue the authorization of the House Republican Conference, pursuant to Conference rules, to file and bring up a privileged motion by July 31, 2021, to vacate the chair and end Nancy Pelosi’s authoritarian reign as Speaker of the House,” the caucus wrote in its statement.

“Rule IX, Clause 3 of the Rules of the House of Representatives for the One Hundred Seventeenth Congress requires that A resolution causing a vacancy in the Office of Speaker shall not be privileged except if offered by direction of a party caucus or conference.”
