Pelosi Announces Vote On 9/11 Commission-Style Review Of The Capitol Insurrection

After a growing bipartisan coalition of lawmakers have called for a deeper investigation into the Capitol insurrection on January 6, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) then confirmed Monday that the establishment of an independent, 9/11 commission-styled investigation will be voted on in Congress soon.

“To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex,” Pelosi said on Monday.

The House Speaker also highlighted plans for the upcoming commission to have meaningful diversity. “Different from 9/11. What were there, nine people? All white, one woman. It will look different,” Pelosi told reporters.

There is already bipartisan support for an independent investigation into the Capitol insurrection..

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), after being censured by his own state’s party for supporting Trump’s conviction, agreed “there should be a complete investigation about what happened. What was known, who knew it and when they knew all that, because that builds the basis, so this never happens again.”

Cassidy hopes to “hold President Trump accountable,” and help Americans hear all of the facts.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), who plans to campaign with Trump in the 2022 midterm elections, also indicated support for an investigation. “His behavior after the election was over the top,” Graham said of Trump. “We need a 9/11 commission to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again.”

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware) agreed saying, “There’s still more evidence that the American people need and deserve to hear and a 9/11 commission is a way to make sure that we secure the Capitol going forward. And that we lay bare the record of just how responsible and how abjectly violating of his constitutional oath President Trump really was.”
