With the Supreme Court expected to use the case Dobbs v. Jackson to overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationally in the U.S, voters in Michigan are mobilizing to prevent a trigger law from going into effect by trying to place an initiative on the November ballot to recognize abortion as a right in the state.
Michigan currently has a law that would reinstate a 1931 abortion ban. The law would ban nearly all abortions in Michigan if Roe v. Wade is overturned.
The liberal causes seem to be gaining momentum in Michigan as recent statistics from the Detroit Chamber of Commerce show that registered Michigan voters listed abortion as one of their top three concerns when voting.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said Democrats will do everything in their power to change the law.
