Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) took note of Donald Trump’s age when asked if he would ever consider pardoning the former president, should he be elected in 2024.

While appearing on The Megyn Kelly Show, DeSantis and Megyn Kelly discussed Trump’s likely third indictment for his role in the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021. Kelly asked the presidential candidate if he would commit to pardoning Trump of any federal charges against him.

“I’m going to do what’s right for the country,” DeSantis said. “I don’t think it would be good for the country to have an almost 80-year-old former president go to prison.”

Kelly asked him to clarify whether he would pardon Trump.

“It just doesn’t seem like it would be a good thing. And I look at like, you know, Ford pardoned Nixon, took some heat for it, but at the end of the day, it’s like, do we want to move forward as a country or do we want to be mired in controversies? And I think the public wants a fresh start,” DeSantis declared. “I think they want somebody that’s going to focus on their issues. We’ve had a lot that’s happened over the last five or six years… But going forward, we’ve got all these issues that we have to deal with.”

Trump currently has a more than 20-point lead over DeSantis in the presidential election. The Florida governor has gone back and forth between supporting and condemning the former president, leaving voters to question his stance on Trump’s controversial bid in the election.
