Bush Ethics Advisor Richard Painter Says Only Way Out For Trump Is To Take A Plea Deal & Resign

Richard Painter, the former chief ethics attorney for President George W. Bush, believes that President Trump’s best option to avoid jail time is to secure a plea deal in exchange for his resignation.

Painter went on MSNBC on Wednesday to discuss the sentencing of President Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen. During the discussion, Painter said that the fact that Cohen was handed a three year prison sentence should send warnings to the White House.

“If the lawyer gets three years, how much time should the client get?” Painter said.

Painter also pointed out that the crimes Cohen was convicted of do not even include those that may come for President Trump after special counsel Robert Mueller concludes his investigation.

“It’s quite clear his goose is cooked here,” Painter said, and commented that the only way he sees the president protecting himself and his family from the charges would be to offer a comprehensive plea deal with the federal prosecutors in exchange for his resignation.

“Donald Trump is in serious trouble. His lawyers ought to be telling him to negotiate a plea deal,” Painter said, and advised the president’s lawyers to “get him out of the White House.”

“Have him resign, plead guilty to lower charges,” Painter added. “Let’s move on as a country.”

Painter served as Former President George W. Bush’s chief ethics attorney from 2005 to 2007, and was a lifelong Republican until this year when he ran and lost in a Senatorial primary race in Minnesota.
