New York City Poison Control Calls Double After Trump’s ‘Disinfectant’ Comment

New York City poison control calls for bleach and Lysol have doubled after President Donald Trump suggested that injecting disinfectants might help combat the coronavirus.

Trump said at a White House briefing last week, “And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds – it sounds interesting to me.”

After the president’s statement, the city’s Poison Control Center received 30 exposure calls. Nine specifically named Lysol, 10 named bleach and 11 others mentioned other household cleaners.

None of the calls resulted in death or hospitalization.

The president later said he was being “sarcastic.”

“I was asking a question sarcastically to reporters like you just to see what would happen,” he said.
