New Polls Show Trump Less Trusted Internationally Than Putin Or Xi

Over the past two decades, Pew Research has polled 13 countries internationally on various approval ratings and opinions of each other. During the Trump Administration’s time in office, the opinions of the United States’ on an international scale have reached some of the lowest approval ratings in the country’s history. Some of these opinions have changed drastically over the past year, like Canadians changing their confidence rating from 51% to 20%; others have only dropped slightly, but have still dropped nonetheless.

Sixteen percent of those polled across the 13 countries have confidence for President Donald Trump; both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin scored higher. German Chancellor Angela Merkel earned a 76% approval rating, most likely due to Germany’s response to the coronavirus.

One of the main reasons for the country’s low approval ratings likely has to do with coronavirus, and how the Trump Administration has responded. With the COVID-19 death toll continuing to rise in the United States and decrease elsewhere, many countries seem to lack confidence in Trump and his response. The U.S. only earned a 15% approval rating when the poll questioned if the country was responding to coronavirus well.

Trump’s response to coronavirus has not only differed from the responses internationally, but even from the professional advice within his own White House. Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the leaders in Trump’s coronavirus task force, has tried his best to reach the American people with advice on how to overcome the virus. Trump very publicly disagrees with many of Fauci’s statements, strongly polarizing how the nation has responded to the virus.
