New Congressional Map Could Mean Face-Off Between Longtime N.Y. Reps. Jerry Nadler & Carolyn Maloney

Redistricting could pit longtime Democratic Reps. Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney against each other in New York’s 12th Congressional District that covers Manhattan’s Upper East and West Sides.

Both representatives have been members of Congress since the early 1990s. Nadler and Maloney are also two of the most powerful members as the chair of the House Judiciary Committee and the chair of the House Oversight Committee, respectively.

Maloney currently represents the Upper East Side in the 12th District while Nadler’s 10th District covers the Upper West Side. A redrawn draft of a map has merged the two districts. Both representatives have voiced their intention to run for the one seat this summer.

“I believe these newly proposed lines by the Special Master violate the NYS constitutional requirements of keeping communities of interest together and keeping the cores of existing districts largely intact,” Nadler wrote in a tweet. “However, provided that they become permanent, I very much look forward to running and representing the people of the newly created 12th District of New York.”

Maloney released a similar statement, announcing that she will run to continue to represent the 12th District.

“A majority of the communities in the newly redrawn NY-12 are ones I have represented for years and to which I have deep ties #NY12 #TeamMaloney,” the longtime representative wrote in a statement.

The proposed maps are not finalized yet. The public will get a chance to make comments this week, and the final version is expected on Friday.

New York’s congressional primary is slated for August 23.
