Mitch McConnell Rejects Rick Scott’s GOP Plan To Raise Taxes On 50% Of Americans

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) rejected Florida Sen. Rick Scott‘s (R) plan “to rescue America,” saying it was more important to focus on the weaknesses in the current administration to propel a Republican wave in the midterm elections rather than present an idea that would give the Democrats ammunition against them.

Scott’s 11-point plan aligns with ex-President Donald Trump‘s agenda, even advocating for building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

McConnell confirmed the plan would not be adopted by the Republican Party.

“Let me tell you what would not be a part of our agenda,” McConnell said. “We will not have as part of our agenda a bill that raises taxes on half the American people, and sunsets Social Security and Medicare within five years.”

“We will focus instead on what the American people are concerned about: inflation, energy, defense, the border and crime,” the Senate GOP leader added.

McConnell said he believes that presenting an agenda should come after the Republicans gain back the House and Senate, and he reiterated that if they were to gain back the Senate, he would be the majority leader and decide what made it onto the floor.

Scott, the chairman of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, made it clear that he’s fine with the party’s distancing from his plan.

“I put out some policy ideas,” he said. “I’m going to keep working on this. There are going to be things people agree with and don’t agree with. There’s going to be changes we’ll make as people give us their thoughts, but I want to have a conversation about what we do. This is what Rick Scott believes in, it’s not the Republican plan. I was very clear that it’s Rick Scott’s policy ideas. It’s nobody else’s policy ideas.”
