Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves Ready To Enact Sweeping Abortion Restrictions

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) has announced that new sweeping abortion restrictions would be going into full effect, stating that the long fight to end Roe v. Wade was never about rights but rather a “culture of life.”

“This entire court battle was never about winning a court case; it was always about creating a culture of life, and that’s exactly what we are doing here in Mississippi,” Reeves told Fox News.

Reeves did not specify how the new laws would be implemented.

“We have to prove that being pro-life is not simply about being anti-abortion, and, in our state, we are enacting policies to do exactly that,” he continued.

Currently, the Women Health Organization is fighting the new restrictions, arguing that there is a clause within the state constitution that allows for more open abortion access.

Reeves was also asked if doctors would be held accountable for violations of the new laws.

The governor stated, “In our state, the enforcement is done by the state board of medical licensure. We have a state board of medical licensure which actually oversees the practice of medicine in our state, and they ensure that any physician that is practicing, whether it’s through telemedicine or otherwise, that any physician that practices in our state is practicing not only based upon the standards of care that we require in our state, but also based upon state law.”

The governor noted that the state had no plans to pursue any searches of phones or mailing services.

Mississippi has one of the lowest rates of health insurance coverage and the highest infant mortality rate in the U.S.
