Michigan Rep. Justin Amash Launches Exploratory Committee For Presidential Run As A Libertarian

Rep. Justin Amash (I-Michigan) announced on Tuesday that he is launching an exploratory committee for a presidential run.

He announced on Twitter his decision to form an exploratory committee to run as the Libertarian Party’s candidate for president, saying, “Let’s do this.”

“Americans are ready for practical approaches based in humility and trust of the people,” Amash tweeted. “We’re ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together.”

Amash announced last year that he would be leaving the Republican Party, saying the country’s political system is “trapped in a partisan death spiral.” Amash also voted to impeach President Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Both Trump’s campaign and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden have been forced to campaign remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Biden has come up with high-profile endorsements like former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders

After Amash’s announcement, Trump tweeted he believed Amash would lose his Congressional seat.

“No, I think Amash would make a wonderful candidate, especially since he is way behind in his district and has no chance of maintaining his Congressional seat. He almost always votes for the Do Nothing Dems anyway. I like him even more than Jill Stein!” it read.

Daniel Fishman, executive director of the Libertarian Party, said the Libertarian Party convention set to take place next month in Austin, Texas, will most likely not happen.
