Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Mocks Trump

On Thursday, the fourth day of the Democratic National Convention, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer mocked former President Donald Trump‘s “That woman from Michigan” remark during her address, referring to him as “That man from Mar-a-Lago.”

Whitmer, who faced criticism from Trump over her handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, opened her speech with a nod to Detroit, embracing her nickname “Big Gretch.” She then dismissed Trump’s nickname with a confident remark, stating, “Being a woman from Michigan is a badge of honor.”

The Michigan governor also targeted Trump’s understanding of everyday American struggles, remarking, “You think he understands that when your car breaks down, you can’t get to work? No! His first word was probably ‘chauffeur.’ You think he’s ever had to take items out of the cart before checking out? Hell, you think he’s even been to a grocery store? That’s what the chauffeur is for.”

Whitmer also briefly shared her experience caring for her mother during her cancer battle, drawing a parallel to Vice President Kamala Harris‘s similar experience.

“Kamala Harris knows who she’s fighting for, too. She took care of her mom who also battled cancer,” said Whitmer. “As president, she’ll fight to lower the cost of healthcare and elder care for every family. She’s lived a life like ours. She knows us. Donald Trump doesn’t know you. At all.”

Whitmer concluded her speech by asserting that, although the future is uncertain, the country needs a leader who can unite people in times of crisis.

A day before her speech, the Michigan governor spoke with CBS News, highlighting the importance for Harris to discuss her economic agenda if she aims to make further progress in the race.

“This is about how do we help more Americans keep money in their pockets. How do we help Americans break down the barriers that keep them from the skills they need to get high-paying jobs? I think that’s fundamentals for so many of us in Michigan and across the country. and that’s what she’s focused on,” Whitmer said.
