Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley was arrested at his home on Thursday morning for his involvement in last year’s January 6 Capitol riots, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Columbia.
Kelley appeared at the U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids later on Thursday. Documents do not say that Kelley was inside the Capitol, but rather that he committed misdemeanors on restricted grounds. Photos and videos of the GOP candidate were sent to the FBI as soon as 10 days after the Capitol breach.
Kelley’s campaign Facebook page was uploaded with a post on Thursday that read, “Political Prisoner.” He was released from the courthouse Thursday afternoon and followed it up with a post that said, “Free,” with two American flag emojis.
Kelley’s name is on the ballot as the GOP nomination to unseat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D).
