Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was pardoned by ex-President Donald Trump after he was convicted of lying to the FBI about Trump’s contacts with Russian nationals during the 2016 election, proclaimed over the weekend that the United States should establish one national religion to establish greater “domestic unity.”
Flynn also appeared to suggest that characters in the Bible alluded to the United States, which would not exist for almost another 2,000 years.
“And they were talking about the United States of America, talking about the United States of America, cause when Matthew mentioned it in the Bible, he wasn’t talking about the physical ground he was on. He was talking about something in the distance,” Flynn declared while answering questions at the right-wing “ReAwaken America” religious conference on Saturday. “So if we are going to have one nation under God, which we must, we have to have one religion. One nation under God, and one religion under God, right? All of us together, working together.”

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution explicitly forbids the establishment of a state religion.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances,” it states.
But that has not deterred some conservatives from parroting Flynn’s message. Josh Mandel, the Republican candidate for United States Senate in Ohio, tweeted on Saturday evening that “we stand with General Flynn.”
Twitter users quickly mocked Mandel’s endorsement of Flynn’s desired theocracy as especially curious because he is of a different faith than Flynn and most of the GOP’s evangelical base.
