NYC Mayor Eric Adams Defends Anti-Gay Hires

Prior to being selected as a faith adviser by New York City Mayor Eric Adams, City Councilman Fernando Cabrera said repeatedly that gay marriage was “unacceptable.” He once praised a Ugandan law that made certain homosexual behavior punishable with life in prison.

Cabrera is among several of Adams’s new hires with anti-gay views.

Rev. Erick Salgado, named as assistant commissioner for immigrant affairs, has a history of anti-LGBT views as well. He referred to homosexuality as a mortal sin in his 2013 campaign as mayor. “My views have evolved as society has evolved,” Salgado said recently.

Adams has rejected the criticism, saying the hires are “best for the City of New York” and claiming that the two conservative pastors are sorry for their past views.

The City Council’s LGBTQ Caucus has demanded that Salgado and Cabrera be removed from their positions.
