Liz Cheney Urges GOP To Stop Trump From Second Term: ‘We Are Electing Idiots!’

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) offered her frank take on the state of American politics: “What we’ve done in our politics is create a situation where we’re electing idiots.”

Cheney made an appearance at an event with 92nd Street Y, a cultural and community center in New York City, to discuss her opinions about the 2024 presidential election.

The former congresswoman is a vocal critic of Donald Trump, the likely Republican nominee, and lost her primary last year to a candidate backed by Trump.

Cheney also co-chaired the House select committee that investigated the events of January 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

Cheney urged voters to stop Trump from serving a second term in the White House.

“I really believe, and I’ve never believed something as strongly as I know this, that the single most important thing for the country is that Donald Trump can’t be anywhere near the Oval Office again,” said Cheney.

Cheney did not explicitly mention the legal troubles that Trump is currently facing, as he was indicted this month on 37 counts for willful retention of national defense information and is preparing for the start of his trial. However, she did nod to the potential threat that he may be, should he be proven guilty.

“Because of the situation that we’re in,” Cheney said, “where we have a major-party candidate who’s trying to unravel our democracy… we have to think about, all right, what kinds of alliances are necessary to defeat him, and those alliances we’ve got to build across party lines.”

When Cheney was asked if she would run for president in an attempt to stop Trump from winning, she deflected the question onto her electoral perspective.

“I don’t look at it through the lens of… is this what I should do or what I shouldn’t do. I look at it through the lens of, how do we elect serious people? And I think electing serious people can’t be partisan.”
