WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 13: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) (R) listens to House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) during a news conference following a caucus meeting at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center February 13, 2019 in Washington, DC. McCarthy said that he supports the framework of a bipartisan spending deal that would avert another partial federal government shutdown but is waiting to read the bill before deciding on whether he would vote for it. The growing divide in the Republican Party over whether or not former President Donald Trump has a future in the party came to a head Wednesday when House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) was directly contradicted by GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming).
When asked if Trump should speak at the upcoming Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), McCarthy said, “Yes he should.” McCarthy has been in regular conversation with Trump and even visited his Palm Beach club Mar-a-Lago soon after Trump’s term ended.
Cheney then responded in direct contradiction saying, “That’s up to CPAC … I don’t believe that he should be playing a role in the future of the party or the country.”

Minority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) can be seen in the background shaking his head in disapproval of Cheney. “On that high note, thank you!” said McCarthy before quickly walking off the podium.
McCarthy is already scheduled to speak at CPAC in Orlando, Florida, notably close to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf club.
