WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 13: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) (R) listens to House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) during a news conference following a caucus meeting at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center February 13, 2019 in Washington, DC. McCarthy said that he supports the framework of a bipartisan spending deal that would avert another partial federal government shutdown but is waiting to read the bill before deciding on whether he would vote for it. On Wednesday morning, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R) pulled his five Republican picks from the January 6 investigative committee. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), the only current Republican on the committee, blasted the move in a fiery statement to the press on Wednesday afternoon.
As it stands, Cheney is the only Republican member, picked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) alongside six Democratic choices. McCarthy charged that Pelosi is abusing her position on the committee accusing her of an “egregious abuse of power.”
He went on to say, “This panel has lost all legitimacy and credibility… Pelosi has broken this institution.”
In response to McCarthy, Cheney spoke to reporters, saying: “There must be an investigation that is nonpartisan, that is sober, that is serious, that gets to the facts, wherever they may lead … And at every opportunity, the Minority Leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened, to block this investigation.”
