Liz Cheney Blasts Kevin McCarthy Over Jan. 6 Commission

On Wednesday morning, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R) pulled his five Republican picks from the January 6 investigative committee. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), the only current Republican on the committee, blasted the move in a fiery statement to the press on Wednesday afternoon.

As it stands, Cheney is the only Republican member, picked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) alongside six Democratic choices. McCarthy charged that Pelosi is abusing her position on the committee accusing her of an “egregious abuse of power.”

He went on to say, “This panel has lost all legitimacy and credibility… Pelosi has broken this institution.”

In response to McCarthy, Cheney spoke to reporters, saying: “There must be an investigation that is nonpartisan, that is sober, that is serious, that gets to the facts, wherever they may lead … And at every opportunity, the Minority Leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened, to block this investigation.”

This comes after Pelosi rejected both Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Jim Banks (R-Indiana) as Republican choices for the committee. The panel is scheduled to meet on July 27 for the first of its high-profile hearings on the attack.
