Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said Wednesday he backs Chick-fil-A as some Notre Dame students have opposed the school’s plan to make the fast-food chain one of its on-campus dining options.
Students have suggested that the chain has shown “serious ethical concerns” in recent years for its donations to anti-LGBT organizations.
Following the report, Graham showed his support for Chick-fil-A, saying he would “go to war for the principles” of the fast-food chain.
“I have always thought @NotreDame was one of the greatest universities in America, if not the world,” Graham tweeted. “It’s disappointing to hear some ND students and faculty want to ban Chick-fil-A from doing business on campus because they disagree with the values held by the Chick-fil-A founders.”

“I want everyone in South Carolina and across America to know I have Chick-fil-A’s back,” the senator added in a series of tweets. “I hope we don’t have to, but I will go to war for the principles Chick-fil-A stands for. Great food. Great service. Great values. God bless Chick fil-A!”
Notre Dame’s campus dining announced on May 12 that they were thinking about adding Chick-fil-A to its dining option.
Chick-fil-A has been known for years for its pro-Christian views. As the company continued to face criticism, it finally ended donations to two groups, the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, for being anti-LGBTQ. It announced that the company would sponsor organizations focusing on other topics such as education, homelessness and hunger.
Notre Dame later announced that the franchise would be coming to the campus next year. Campus Dining has also said that the construction of the new Chick-fil-A will be starting next month.
“Notre Dame has examined the concerns surrounding Chick-fil-A’s charitable giving, discussed them with company representatives, campus partners and students and believes that Chick-fil-A has responded to these issues in a satisfactory manner,” the university said in a statement.
