Lara Trump Eyeing Potential North Carolina Senate Bid In 2022

The president’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, is reportedly considering a 2022 Senate bid in her home state of North Carolina.

Lara Trump has said she has been talking about running to replace Sen. Richard Burr (R-North Carolina), who plans to retire at the end of the term.

Former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told the Times that Lara Trump “would be formidable” as a candidate.

“She has the trifecta: She can raise money, raise awareness of key issues and raise attention to her race,” Conway said. “Unlike many typical politicians, she connects with people and is a compelling messenger.”

The seat has gone back and forth between parties but has been in Burr’s hands since 2005. North Carolina also became a battleground state during the 2020 presidential cycle, with President Donald Trump narrowly winning by a margin of 1.3%.

The race is expected to attract many prominent politicians in the primary, including Rep. Mark Walker (R-North Carolina), White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former Gov. Pat McCrory (R), North Carolina Speaker Tim Moore and Dan Forest, the former Republican nominee for governor who lost in 2017.

However, bearing the Trump family name could hold significant political influence within the GOP sphere, and Lara Trump’s charisma would likely make her a strong Republican candidate.

“In North Carolina, in particular, she’s a household name and people know her. She worked really hard on the campaign and was very involved in a lot of decisions throughout,” Trump campaign adviser Mercedes Schlapp told the Times, adding that she is “very charismatic” with “a natural instinct for politics.”
