Kremlin Says Trump Foreign Policy Shift ‘Largely Aligns’ With Own Positions

On Sunday, the Kremlin stated that the United States’ recent foreign policy shift under President Donald Trump largely aligns with its own stance. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the Trump administration’s rapidly evolving foreign policy “largely aligns with our own vision.” He stated, “There is a long way to go because a lot of damage has been done to the whole complex of bilateral relations. But if the policy will of the two leaders, President Putin and President Trump, is maintained, this path can be quite quick and successful.”

The United States had previously provided Ukraine with over a $100 billion in aid following Russia’s invasion in 2022. However, under the new administration, support for Ukraine appears to be waning as Washington signals a shift toward closer engagement with Moscow.

The Kremlin’s position follows a tense confrontation between Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week in the Oval Office. Vance accused Zelensky of a lack of gratitude for U.S. aid, while Trump warned that Zelensky’s refusal to negotiate with Putin was “gambling with World War III.”

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev mocked Zelensky’s treatment, while Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested that Trump and Vance had shown remarkable “restraint” in not punching Zelensky in the face

Since taking office, Trump has worked to rebuild relations with Russia, reaching out directly to President Vladimir Putin and backing Moscow in the United Nations on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

However, there is little certainty that Trump’s stance will significantly alter the course of the war. According to the editor of Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Konstantin Remchukov, officials are aware the upcoming U.S. midterm elections could limit any window for securing a favorable peace deal. He stated, “At the top of government I have not seen anyone who is too optimistic about ending the conflict. Even though Trump’s position seems anti-Zelensky, nobody thinks he is pro-Russian entirely—or for good.”
