Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway, who days ago announced she is resigning from her position, spoke at the National Republican Convention on Wednesday. Supporting President Donald Trump, Conway praised him for being a “champion” of women.
Conway’s speech at the RNC on Wednesday coincided with Women’s Equality day. As polls suggest Trump is losing support among white women, Conway used her RNC appearance to elevate Trump’s image for female voters. As Trump has had a history of attacking women, calling House Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden‘s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California), “nasty” and “mean,” Conway made the surprising argument that the president is pro-women.
“For decades, he has elevated women to senior positions in business and in government,” Conway said. “He confides in and consults us, respects our opinions and insists that we are on equal footing with the men. President Trump helped me shatter a barrier in the world of politics by empowering me to manage his campaign to its successful conclusion,” she said.
“For many of us, ‘women’s empowerment’ is not a slogan. It comes not from strangers on social media or sanitized language in a corporate handbook. It comes from the everyday heroes who nurture us, who shape us and who believe in us,” she continued. “The promise of America belongs to us all. This is a land of inventors and innovators, of entrepreneurs and educators, of pioneers and parents, all contributing to the success and the future of a great nation and her people. These everyday heroes have a champion in President Trump.”

Conway has been a loyal Trump supporter and defender during her time at the administration. She often defended Trump in press conferences, as reporters pressed on her to comment some of president’s controversial remarks.
Her husband, conservative D.C. attorney George Conway, on the other hand, has been a vigorous Trump critic. He was involved in anti-Trump GOP group Lincoln Project before announcing he was resigning to spend more time with his family. After he publicly criticized Trump last year, Trump shot back, calling him “husband from Hell” and a “total loser.”
