Kamala Harris Says Abortion Bans Create Crisis

Vice President Kamala Harris (D) said abortion bans across the United States are leading to a crisis.

The interview with MSNBC on Morning Joe, which marks the two-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, which ended federal protections for abortion and gave the states legislative power.

Harris was interviewed alongside reproductive rights advocate Hadley Duvall, who shared her story of her abortion following sexual abuse in an advertisement for Kentucky Gov. Andy Bershar (D).

Harris reflected on a visit she made to a reproductive care clinic earlier this year to the co-host Mika Brzezinski.

“In those clinics that are trusted in the community, there is — you can get a Pap [smear] … breast cancer screening, HIV screening, the things that where people want to be able to walk into a health care facility and be treated with dignity and without judgment so they can address their health care concerns,” Harris said.

She stated that the bans on abortion are reducing essential healthcare access.

“That’s what these clinics do. And in states where they have passed these Trump abortion bans, these clinics are closing, which means that there is a reduction of very essential health care across the board for a lot of people,” Harris said.

Duvall told Brzezinski that any woman at reproductive age is at stake due to the abortion bans.

“If there is a woman who is in that reproductive age, then her life is at stake during this election,” Duvall said

They urged voters to vote blue this November to protect access to abortion and other reproductive services.

“It does not matter if you have never voted Democrat in your life,” Duvall said. “It’s get off your high horse, because women, we don’t get to choose a whole lot, and you at least can choose who you can vote for.”

Harris added that this issue focuses heavily on freedom.

“Fundamentally, on this issue, it’s about freedom,” Harris said. “And every person of whatever gender should understand that, if such a fundamental freedom such as the right to make decisions about your own body can be taken, be aware of what other freedoms may be at stake.”
