The Justice Department is considering naming a special counsel to oversee the two federal investigations of former President Donald Trump should he launch his 2024 campaign for the White House in the coming weeks.
The government is currently probing Trump for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election and possibly mishandling classified White House documents by taking them to his Mar-a-Lago residence.
As sources point to the third week of November as the launch of Trump’s 2024 bid, the Justice Department has been quietly forging forward in its investigations into the former president. Reports say that they are prepared to take more public action following the midterm elections as they have been using grand jury subpoenas to order witness testimony. Leading up to the November 8 election date, federal agencies go about their work in private as the goal is to avoid influencing votes.
The Justice Department is also considering the naming of a special counsel to avoid accusations that the Biden administration is using the investigations to take down perhaps its largest political challenger.
