The U.S. Justice Department recently opened a criminal investigation into former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) regarding his administration’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in New York.
Republicans have accused the former New York governor of lying to investigators about the total nursing home death count in New York after an earlier request to the Biden Administration did not lead to an investigation.
Cuomo’s administration has been accused of underestimating the total death count by approximately 50%. The former governor has consistently downplayed any wrongdoing on his part and by his administration. His legal team filed a referral letter in October 2024, which requested that the GOP-led committee investigating the accusation against Cuomo be investigated for abuse of power.
The investigation comes at a time when Cuomo is seeking a return to politics, running as a Democratic and independent candidate for New York City’s upcoming mayoral race. Cuomo resigned as governor of New York in 2021 amid allegations of sexually harassing 11 women, which Cuomo has publicly denied.

Cuomo has been a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, going back to the president’s first term in office. The former New York governor now joins a list of political enemies of Trump being investigated by the Department of Justice.
Trump’s apparent use of the legal system to target his political opposition has been critiqued as unconstitutional and an outright abuse of power by many legal experts.
Trump claims his administration is working to de-weaponize law enforcement.
“There could be no more heinous betrayal of American values than to use the law to terrorize the innocent and reward the wicked,” said Trump in a speech to the DOJ back in March. “In the coming years, we will revive the storied legacy of this department.”
