Justice Department Issues More Than 40 Subpoenas In Trump Probe

The Justice Department issued a slew of 40-plus subpoenas to current and former members of ex-President Donald Trump‘s inner circle on Monday, signaling a strong indication of how serious the government’s probe into Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack is getting.

The subpoenas will require its subjects to testify and documents to be released. The Justice Department is reportedly looking into Trump’s role in pressuring then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject electors during the certification of President Joe Biden‘s 2020 win. The government is also likely investigating the fundraising and organization that went into the “Stop the Steal” rally, which preceded the Capitol riots.

The Justice Department issued the subpoenas right before the 60-day timeframe they usually allow before the election to refrain from influencing it in any way. Among those subpoenaed include Trump’s former campaign managers Bill Stepien and Sean Dollman, as well as White House political director Brian Jack. The subpoenas covered many different topics, including fake electors, Trump’s Save America PAC, fundraising and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The House select committee investigating the events surrounding and during the Capitol attack is also looking to continue its probe. The committee took a hiatus from televised hearings, it is expected to soon determine what the next steps of the investigation will look like, including the possibility of more nationally televised events.

Trump is also under scrutiny by the Justice Department and the Atlanta-area district attorney’s office for allegedly mishandling classified White House documents following his term and possible election fraud in Georgia, respectively.
