Justice Department Investigating Trump For Possible Election Crimes

The U.S Department of Justice is investigating former President Donald Trump and his allies for potential crimes before a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., it was revealed on Tuesday night.

Amid the evidence uncovered by the January 6 Committee, Trump and his allies have been put in the spotlight for their roles in the January 6 Capitol riot and attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

The information uncovered has raised questions about criminal prosecutions against those responsible.

In an interview with NBC News, Attorney General Merrick Garland told Lester Holt that both the Department of Justice and the Committee are doing two separate investigations and that it is “inevitable” that they will uncover different information.

Garland also said that the Justice Department would hold “everybody who is criminally responsible” for the plot to overthrow the 2020 election.

When Holt asked Garland about Trump’s rumored 2024 election bid, Garland stated that the department would not stop the inquiry because of an election bid.

“We will hold accountable anyone who was criminally responsible for attempting to interfere with the transfer, legitimate, lawful transfer of power from one administration to the next,” Garland said.

The recent hearings have included information about several Trump aides who developed a plan to place fake electors in key counties.

While some on the commission have suggested the evidence could lead to criminal prosecutions, it is still unknown to what lengths prosecutors will be willing to go.
