Justice Department Investigating Fake Trump Electors, Deputy AG Says

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco has said that the Justice Department is looking into the fake Donald Trump electors in seven states during the 2020 election, but that she could not say more about the investigation.

The National Archives received fake documents in December 2020 listing Trump as the winner of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – all states that actually went to Biden.

At first, it seemed like the certificates were created by “sovereign citizen” groups, but a deeper investigation suggested that there was a bigger scheme. Now, some sources say that Trump ally and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani may have played a crucial part in coordinating the process. He has been subpoenaed to testify about his role in the fake elector scheme by the Jan. 6 select committee investigating the Capitol attack.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has provided federal prosecutors information from her year-long probe of the fraudulent electors. She said she believes that there is enough to charge the 16 Michigan signees, who include Republican National Committee member Kathy Brenden, Shelby County Clerk Stanley Grot and State Party co-chair Meshawn Maddock, who was elected to the position after signing the fraudulent documents.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland) suggested that the fake electors were established to create uncertainty around the results, so that former Vice President Mike Pence would reject the certification of President Joe Biden.

“The people who pretended to be official electors in states that were won by Biden were undoubtedly guilty of fraud on the Constitution and on the democracy,” Raskin continued. “It’s a trickier question whether they are guilty of either common-law fraud, state statutory fraud, federal mail fraud or some other offense.”
