Jim Jordan’s Bid For House Speakership May Be Blocked By A Group Of Fellow Republicans

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is likely to face a new challenge in his race for the speakership as several House Republicans are considering blocking his path to the post. Jordan will reportedly be attempting to force a floor vote on Tuesday.

Observers estimate that there are nearly 40 “no” votes, and 20 members are ready to block his bid if he forces a roll-call vote on Tuesday.

Republicans may hold a closed-door meeting to discuss the matter on Monday evening.

However, there are reports that Jordan’s interaction with his colleagues has been positive and he is hoping to succeed in his race for the Speakership Tuesday evening.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Massachusetts) is said to have sent out an email saying that the House is likely to hold a vote for the new leader at noon on Tuesday.

Jordan was nominated by the GOP conference as speaker last week. Earlier, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisana) had withdrawn from the race after being initially nominated by the conference and defeating Jordan. Scalise was forced to drop after several Republicans refused to vote for him.

The speaker’s seat fell vacant earlier this month after the historic ouster of Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker, days after he joined hands with Democrats to pass a stopgap plan that averted a government shutdown.
