Jan. 6 Hearings Reveal Trump Agreed With ‘Hang Mike Pence’ Chants

President Donald Trump‘s reaction to his supporters chanting “Hang Mike Pence” was revealed on Thursday night as the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack held its first public hearing.

“Aware of the rioters’ chants to ‘hang Mike Pence,’ the president responded with this sentiment: ‘Maybe our supporters have the right idea.’ Mike Pence ‘deserves it,” Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), who serves as the vice-chair of the committee, said.

Then-Vice President Mike Pence refused to go along with Trump’s plan to overturn the 2020 election and presided over the joint session of Congress as it certified President Joe Biden‘s win.

The hearings will continue through July and will lay out the information the committee has collected through conducting upwards of a thousand interviews and reviewing 140,000 documents during their eleven-month probe. The opening hearing made it clear that the committee believes there is enough evidence to prove that Trump and his allies had a “seven-step plan” to overturn the 2020 election and that he was responsible for inciting the violence at the Capitol.

While the committee doesn’t have the power to indict Trump, it could be a powerful tool in swaying public perception.
