Jan. 6 Committee Subpoenas Trump White House Counsel Pat Cipollone

Trump White House counsel Pat Cipollone was subpoenaed by the House select committee that has been investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack for the past year on Wednesday.

“The Select Committee’s investigation has revealed evidence that Mr. Cipollone repeatedly raised legal and other concerns about President Trump’s activities on January 6th and in the days that preceded,” committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) and vice-chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) wrote in a statement. “While the Select Committee appreciates Mr. Cipollone’s earlier informal engagement with our investigation, the committee needs to hear from him on the record, as other former White House counsels have done in other congressional investigations.”

Cipollone was mentioned numerous times by former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows‘ top aide Cassidy Hutchinson‘s testimony during Tuesday’s public hearing.

“Mr. Cipollone and I had a brief private conversation where he said to me, ‘We need to make sure that this doesn’t happen. This would be a legally a terrible idea for us. We’re — we have serious legal concerns if we go up to the Capitol that day,” Hutchinson testified.

According to Hutchinson, Cipollone had also rushed to speak with then-President Donald Trump as rioters broke into the Capitol, only to be told by Meadows, “[Trump] doesn’t want to do anything, Pat.”

“[Cipollone] very clearly said this to Mark – something to the effect of, ‘Mark, something needs to be done or people are going to die and the blood’s going to be on your f**king hands. This is getting out of control. I’m going down there,'” Hutchinson added.

Other witnesses who have given interviews to the committee have also named Cipollone as someone who knew information about the mindset of Trump and those close to him leading up to, during and after January 6.
