Vice President J.D. Vance has accused Denmark of under-investing in Greenland’s security. His comments, made during a visit to the U.S. military’s Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, have further strained the U.S. and Denmark’s relations as President Donald Trump advocates for American control over the strategically significant territory.
Vance’s trip was dramatically scaled back after the V.P. was unable to find any Greenlanders to meet with.
Vance suggested that the U.S. has “no option” but to take action on Greenland’s security, even hinting at support for Greenland’s independence from Denmark. He further stated that he believes Greenland will ultimately partner with the United States, promising more security, protection and economic benefits. While Vance downplayed the possibility of military force, he implied that the U.S. would pursue a “Donald Trump-style” deal to secure Greenland’s future under American influence.

The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen rejected Vance’s accusations, emphasizing that Denmark remains a “good and strong ally” of the U.S. However, she recognizes that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, a sentiment shared by Greenlandic officials and residents who have opposed Trump’s actions.
